JOY KREVES

My work is about the human - earth connection. Sculptures are "plastiglomerate"-like "rocks", created from plastic refuse. They are UV-interactive via hand-held UV flashlights. Photographs express human-wrought destruction of the environment. I have never stopped creating art since I discovered its magical power as a youngster. Earliest memories are of attempting to write by making loops, then running to my parents to ask if I’d written anything. Also, of sitting on the floor, drawing horses with my sister, who informed me that horses could not be red. Too late! I’d unwittingly proven that horses could be red by making one red! What power! I was hooked.

A child of Illinois cornfields, I followed my dream of being an artist in NYC, to leave for the man of my dreams (in 1984). We lived in NJ for 35 years of bliss before he died from lung cancer in 2020, in spite of having quit smoking 35 years earlier. Our daughter, Ivia Sky Yavelow, is also an artist. I reside in Ewing now with my handsome dog Zeus, who couldn’t care less about art or poetry, but is an aesthetic pleasure to behold.
